I’ve always loved color and shapes. I find nature fascinating, and I can see art in the mundane. I’m glad I have that ability as it’s such an easy escape from an often-ugly world. Sometimes we need a mental vacation, and nothing feels better than when I’m making art. It seems to be the only world that makes sense for me. It can hold so much emotion and feeling for the artist.
Once I rented my studio it took me a little over a year to find my “style”. If I hadn’t been trying so hard, it would have taken much less time. I mean, ME……..overthinking! I have always kept my ADHD in check by doodling, drawing and mark making. My earlier doodles almost always included swirls and arrows for some reason. They were therapeutic, I suppose. Today my strokes can be very smooth and natural looking if I want. This is because I often drew exaggerated abstract lettering as well.
One day I said in my head “just scribble what you see, paint over if you don’t’ like it. “Style” accepted. She was born with that painting, and her name is “Freedom”. She means so much more than Freedom in painting. “Just like me, my art’s not for everyone”
I start by asking God to paint with me. I choose colors and start with a base layer. I will layer different colors and textures until it’s obvious what I’m supposed to be looking at then I add marks to enhance what is on the canvas. Talk about an adventure. Often times what I started with will have zero impact on the final product. It may become completely covered and that’s part of the process for me.
