About the Exhibition

Amy Henson is a ceramic artist whose research centers on figurative or sculptural functional pottery. Currently Henson’s concepts focus on maternal feminism, inspired by the challenges of her lived experience as a woman, artist, and mother, and real or imagined flora and fauna mythic enough to reflect marginalization and the human psyche. Subjects include domesticated animals like horses, wildlife perceived as pest animals such as opossums and raccoons, as well as creatures from the fantastic bestiary like cryptids. Humble red earthenware softly textured with pinch marks presents an ideal foundation to communicate aspects of marginalization associated with craft and function.

“Domestic Ecotone” addresses motherhood with a broader lens through the artist’s matriline, identity, and collaboration. The passage of time is reflected through generational bonds, and growth and change as a parent. From the left of the entry wrapping around to the right, works will express the beginning of Henson’s journey into motherhood with more corporeal pieces like Inheritance and Letdown, responding palpably to 2nd Wave Feminism. Matrilineal Tea, installed on her grandmother’s dining table, pays homage to 4 generations of women in Henson’s family. Each themed cup and saucer is designed according to that woman’s interests, inspired by Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party. Collaborative works include Wunderkammer, which houses objects Henson made with her daughter Rosalie, and Mercat Bottle Set, created directly from a drawing by Rosalie. The exploration of identity, and how Henson was shaped by her forebears yet continues to change over time, remains evident across the exhibition. Throughout, Henson’s art acts as a whimsical invitation toward self knowledge.
